Snai's roots reach back to 1906 and the company created to develop Milan's San Siro racecourse, and the modern SNAI betting group grew out of Italy's horse-racing agency network. It listed on the Milan bourse in 1997 and took its first retail sports bet on 2 June 1998, during the opening match of the France World Cup — an origin story few betting brands can match.

SNAI launched online betting in 2004 and added online casino games in 2011; today snai.it offers slots, roulette, blackjack, live-dealer tables and traditional Italian card games under ADM licence, operated by Snaitech S.p.A. Snaitech was formed in 2015 through the merger of the Snai and Cogemat/Cogetech groups, was acquired by Playtech in 2018, and was sold to Flutter Entertainment in a transaction completed on 30 April 2025.

That deal put Snai on its third listed parent — from its own Milan listing, to LSE-listed Playtech, to Flutter Entertainment (NYSE: FLUT). Together with Sisal, Snai gives Flutter control of two of Italy's largest omnichannel gaming operators, cementing the group's number-one position in Europe's biggest regulated online casino market.
